THE GEOGRAPHIC SITUATION :

The most famous areas of Burgundy are:
-The CHABLIS region, near Auxerre, in the Yonne
- La Cote de Nuits, between Dijon and Beaune, in the Cote d’Or
- La Cote de Beaune, between Beaune and Chagny, in the Cote d’Or

CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET is in the last sector in the extreme South of the Cote d’Or.
Easily reached on the RN6 or on the ROUTE DES GRANDS CRUS. The vines are at a moderate altitude of 240 to 320 m. above sea-level.

THE MICROCLIMATE :

The south of the Cote d’Or is under the influence of the airmass originating in the mediteranean, Atlantic and Continental climates. The winds bring the heat or the cold (the “bise” from the East) but have the advantage of sweeping away bad weather. La MONTAGNE and MONT RACHET in the west form a natural wind barrier

THE VINEYARD:

Gives the white wines their world fame, thanks to the celebrated MONTRACHET
This vineyard has given the villages of CHASSAGNE and PULIGNY a name evocative of pleasure with their association to MONTRACHET from the 18th century.
In effect these 2 villages divide the celebrated vineyard which produces 30,000 bottles of exceptional and worldwide appreciated white wine annually .
To illustrate the fame of this MONTRACHET WINE I need only refer to an extract of DANGUY and AUBERTIN’s 1892 book about the Great Wines of Burgundy:

" This adnirable White Wine is the first rank of White Burgundy, as CHATEAU YQUEM is to the top rank of white Bordeaux. Let us not be indecisive between the two, except to enthusiastically say that these two are the FIRST RANK WHITE WINES OF THE WORLD "

The VITICULTURE is the principle activity of the commune of some 350 hectares. For the most part the vines are planted low at 1 metre with a density of 9,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare. This important density is contrary to high-planted vines , so that a more finesse, expression and aroma is found. The VARIETIES within the commune are principally CHARDONNAY, PINOT NOIR and also ALIGOTE.

MARBLED STONE :

The quarry doesn’t pass unnoticed above the village. The extracted stone is
showing a range of beige and pink marble, well known by architects. It competes with the celebrity of MONTRACHET WINE and can be admired on ornaments of the Trocadero, in the room below the Louvre’s pyramid and in the war museum in Washington (USA). It is used for magnificent chimneys, staircases and tiling.

MONT BLANC:

You can see the king of summits on certain days : the MONT BLANC, early mornings or at sunset. It sign rain tomorrow, rare in Burgundy ! However you will be happy to have seen it.
For the best view to admire the setting sun over the Alps it is worth the journey to TROIS CROIX (Commune of DEZIZE les MARANGES some 8Km)

THE SOIL :

EXTRAORDINARILY, UNIQUE, one of the major components to produce WINE. It is a cocktail of argil, sand, chalk, iron oxides, with different compositions through the vineyards. The entirely suitable soil, the sun exposition, the altitude and the choice of variety is the key to the success of CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET and the GRANDS CRUS of the village.

THE BEAUTY OF THE COUNTRYSIDE through the year

May to September : The vegetion grows, the rows are perfectly pruned, GREEN dominates

September : the sectors with “Pinot Noir” are marked by their marbled red leaves

Second half of October : Undeniably the best golden colours which certainly merit the name Cote d’Or

December to April : Soil and vines dominate sometimes several centimetres under snow.
